How it works

  1. Read bank messages

Use the upstream app's on-device SMS parsing.

  2. Keep data on the phone

Preserve the upstream privacy model without uploading bank messages.

  3. Track personal finances

Build on that foundation with budgets, subscriptions, and net-worth tracking.

Overview

Mudal is my fork of pennywiseai-tracker by sarim2000. That upstream app is the privacy-first Android expense tracker that reads bank SMS on the device. Mudal does not replace it. The fork’s focus is budgets, subscriptions, and net worth.

Problem

The useful base already exists. A from-scratch SMS parser would mostly repeat work the upstream project has already done, including the decision to keep those messages on the phone.

Solution

I maintain a fork. Parsing and storage stay on the device, which is the upstream privacy model. The areas I am carrying are budget tracking, subscription tracking, and net-worth tracking.

Key features

  • On-device SMS reading, inherited from pennywiseai-tracker
  • Budget tracking
  • Subscription tracking
  • Net-worth tracking

Security notes

The privacy model comes from the upstream app. SMS is read on the device and is not uploaded as part of that design. I have not replaced that model with a server.

Outcome

Mudal is a maintained fork, not an app I wrote from zero. Read the upstream project first: pennywiseai-tracker.
